Why we keep returning to Al Jahili

A note on the way late light softens fort walls — and what an evening can borrow from it.

Al Jahili Fort opens at four in the afternoon. By half past five the sandstone has begun to give back the day, and the courtyard reads almost amber. We have set tables here exactly twice. Both times the room did most of the work.

Borrowing from a place is harder than imitating one. We do not bring the fort back to the venue. We bring the cadence of it — long pauses, low palettes, walls that hold without ornament.
